Of all the DIY projects that people undertake today, putting in a preformed pond is high on the list. They make it easy for anyone to add a pond to their backyard.

Thankfully it's getting pretty easy to find preformed pond kits. Home and hardware retailers now keep a good supply of pond supplies on hand. Even Walmart offers small kits that will hold up to several hundred gallons of water which is perfect for most homeowners.

When purchasing a pond kit of any kind it's a good idea to plan ahead and figure out not only the layout that you want but also if the pond will hold fish or not. If fish are in your future it's often better to go a bit bigger in gallon size to allow a bit more room for them. All ponds have their limits on how many fish they can safely hold and this is dependent on not only the gallon capacity (more will hold more fish) but also the type and size of filter you're planning on using.

Many smaller ponds have mechanical type filters which are fine for most, but if your fish population get's heavy and overstocked, a mechanical filter won't keep the water quality level high enough. Problems like ammonia spikes can harm fish so something like a biological filter would be better where fish are concerned.

With that basic stuff out of the way, and once you've got the design and positioning down the way you want it, it's now time to go shopping. You may be surprised to find that there's a vast array of layouts available. In a sense this is necessary because preformed ponds are not really customized. You pick the shape and size and go with it. If you find that you really want more variety, then you'll probably want to investigate something like a rubber liner instead. These are flexible and can fit any size or shape of pond design.

Since our focus here is on preformed ponds, you should know that they are usually more durable than rubber and they're very resistant to puncturing. The only real concern is in cold weather when, like all plastic, they can crack. Usually you won't run a small pond like this in the winter months so they should be emptied of water and covered until spring.

As a DIY project, a small pond install is terrific. One thing that will make it quite easy is if you look for a pond kit that has the liner or shell as well as the mechanical components such as the filter and pump. And finally after everything is settled in, you can add some gold fish or koi.

Finishing off a diy project like this can be even more fun than the installation. Use your creative eye to covertly hide the pond edging with rocks or slate and create the landscaping around the preformed pond to make it appear to be as if nature put it there in the first place.

As water temperatures start to warm and fish begin to swim, it's time to do your spring maintenance for your pond or water garden.

Spring maintenance includes cleaning the pond, checking your water quality, adding beneficial bacteria and adding the necessary water conditioners if needed.

Instructions for ponds that have been cared for during the autumn and winter

If you kept your pond clean during the autumn and winter, your spring maintenance will be very simple.

Clean the pond's water surface and bottom of any debris such as leaves, twigs, dead plants, etc. This can be accomplished using a fish net with a handle or pond vacuum.

Also, clean the filter, waterfall and streams.

Check your water quality for ph, buffer, nitrates and nitrites. If you have fish in your pond and the ph is very high or very low, adjust it gradually over the course of a few days. Drastic swings in ph can kill your fish especially Koi.

Next, add a good beneficial bacteria to help start up the beneficial bacteria in the pond.

If you have a UV clarifier, change the UV bulb at least once per year.

Connect your pumps, UV clarifiers, start pumps and check for leaks.

Instructions for ponds that have not been cared for during the autumn and winter

If the pond has a tremendous amount of leaves or muck in it because you did not cover it with a net in autumn, you may need to drain it in order to clean it properly. Only do this as a last option. Changing the water is very stressful to the fish and will eliminate all of the beneficial bacteria.

If you need to drain a pond that has fish, get a large container to use as a temporary pond for the fish. Keep the container in the shade so the water does not heat up. Fill the container with water from your pond. Catch the fish with a fish net and place them into the container. Put a net over the container to keep the fish from jumping out.

Drain the pond using a sump pump connected to a backwash hose. Clean the pond by removing all the leaves and debris from the bottom of the pond. Hose off the rocks, sides and bottom of the pond to loosen all the dirt. Continue using the sump pump until the water is clean. Also clean the filter, waterfalls and streams.

Start filling up the pond with fresh water. While filling up the pond, drain about 10% of the water from the container where the fish are being kept. Then add fresh water to the container. Continue doing this while the pond is being filled. This is so the water temperature will gradually adjust to the temperature of the new water being added to the pond. Drastic water temperature changes can also kill the fish.

While the water is filling up in the pond, you will need to add a chlorine and metal neutralizer to the water. Chlorine from tap water and metals such as copper and lead from pipes can kill the fish.

By relocating the fish and changing the water you are putting the fish under much stress. Because of this, you should add a water conditioner to increase the slime coat on the fish. This should definitely be done if you have Koi.

Check the pond water ph level. Make sure it is as close as possible to the existing water that the fish are in. Adjust the ph level if needed using a ph plus or ph minus water conditioner.

Next, add a good beneficial bacteria to help start up the beneficial bacteria in the pond. It will take about 6 to 8 weeks for the bacteria to colonize.

If you have a UV clarifier, change the UV bulb at least once per year.

If you don't have a UV clarifier, you may want to add a water conditioner to control algae blooms until the bacteria colonizes.

Once the water temperature and ph is similar between the pond and the container, you can add the fish back into the pond.

Connect your pumps, UV clarifiers, start pumps and check for leaks.

The easiest way to keep pond water clear, algae free and keep your fish healthy is by keeping your pond clean all year long. If you don't keep it clean all year long, following the above procedure will help eliminate algae blooms in the spring and keep your fish healthy.

Algaecides contain copper sulfate which can build up in the organs of fish and other wildlife. The City of Naples, Florida has banned copper sulfate because it heavily contaminates Naples Bay, and the European Union has regarded forbidding its use as it is "not compatible with sustainable ecosystems."

In the pump-fed koi pond, dirty water from the pond is pumped from the koi pond to an external filter and clean water is return to the pond by gravity. A pump-fed pond requires two design components. There has to be a pump in the pond and the water has to be pumped to a higher level than the pond to allow for a gravity return. There are two main disadvantages with this type of design. The pump is in the pond pumping dirty water making it more susceptible to frequent clogging requiring maintenance. It also has to be powerful enough to lift the water to the filter system. This external filter system sitting higher than the koi pond can make hiding it with landscaping more difficult. However, an advantage of this arrangement is that a water feature such as a waterfall can be constructed to act as a water return.

These systems are the easiest to install and are relatively inexpensive. Since you will never be able to pump all the waste from the bottom of the pond, you will need to vacuum the pond to do this effectively. Ease of construction and installation is a definite trade-off with expense of maintenance of the system.

In a gravity-fed system the water in the koi pond and the filter system are at the same level. A pump is placed in the last chamber of the filter system to pump clean water back into the pond. A drain in the floor of the pond is used to drain dirty water into the filter system by gravity. Unlike the pump-fed system the pump in the gravity-fed system is pumping clean water and less likely to get clogged. Maintenance costs will be less with this type of filter system. Because the filter is at the same level as the pond it can be more easily accessed for maintenance and removal and can be easily hidden by wooden deck work and landscaping.

All in all the gravity-fed system is a better long term choice than the pump-fed system even if it is a little more expensive to initially install.

My sand filter is running at high pressures

Follow the backwashing instructions in your Owner's Manual. The sand bed may be clogged with mineral deposits that will not backwash away. Some calcium based chlorines and other alternative sanitizers will build up in your sand bed, and will wish more frequent backwashing and changing of the sand.

Before you replace all the sand in your filter, try removing roughly 1" of the top layer of the sand, replace with the exact amount of sand you removed. General life span of the sand is about 4 - 5 years.

Check to see if there is a closed or partially closed valve along your return piping, open the valve.

Your pump may be too small to supply enough flow for permissible backwashing. Your filter will function, but a lower institute flow rate will cause your law to backwash improperly. Check the yield of the pump to be sure that it equals your filter's institute flow rate. Replace the pump if it is too small.

My sand filter is running in short cycles

Improper backwashing could be the reason. Always backwash until the water runs clear in the valve's sight glass, ordinarily about two minutes.

You may have live algae causing the filter to clog. By testing the water equilibrium with a test kit and super chlorinating, you should solve this problem.

Your pump may be hooked up to the wrong port on the multiport valve. If incorrectly installed, the filter will be flowing in reverse. Be sure the pump is related to the port marked "pump" on the valve.

You could be backwashing too often. Backwash only when the pressure rises 7 - 10 psi over the beginning pressure, or when the return flow back into the pool becomes low.

My filter is noisy

An oversized pump may cause noise in your filter valve due to inordinate flow. To test, hold your hand partially in front of any returns at the pool wall. If the noise subsides, this will confirm that the question is inordinate flow. It can be remedied by by installing smaller eyeball fittings in the return(s), changing the pump impeller size in the pump, or turn to a 2-inch operate valve.

The valve seat gasket inside the valve has come to be worn or loose. How do you replace the gasket? You will need a new gasket, some Krazy Glue, and a sharp 1/8-inch wide flat bladed screwdriver.
